In earlier times we understood that we were a part of the earth. We used to respect Nature, we did not waste life or disrespect animals and nature, but honored and thanked them for providing us with life, nourishment, and comfort. In earlier times we gave honor to the animal spirits with prayers, shields, dances, and singing songs. We painted the animals on our homes, caves, death chambers, and asked the Spirit of the animal to guide and help us. These acts allowed us to remain connected to the animal guides and to accept the lessons they offer us, in life, and in death. It reminded us that all animals were our brothers, sisters, our teachers, and friends. It helped us to know, we are ALL animals with spirit.
The Power of animal totems has not been lost. They still hold the power and the knowledge. Only, we must remember how to be One with Nature and All that Is. Our ancestors understood that by honoring the animal kingdom, we can call upon the power of an animal, asking to be in complete harmony with the strength or ability of that animal's essence. Gaining understanding from Nature and Animals, that all things are connected, We are all one, gives us understanding and wisdom of our role in the Great Mystery, and in honoring every living thing as a teacher. We awaken in ourselves dormant embers of remembrance of a time when our relationship to animals was that of oneness.
