| TOUR OF GRAND CANYON The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long,18 miles wide and 1 mile deep and widely proclaimed one of the wonders of the natural world. The Paiutes call it Kaibab or “Mountain lying Down” The region possesses five of the seven life zones ascribed to the Northern Hemisphere. As for the geological aspect, no other place in the world has such a vast view of time displayed so clearly. Each stratum of rock distinctly marks a period of the Earth’s history from 2 billion to 250 million years ago. The Rocks of the Grand Canyon tell of past mountains as high as the Himalayas, now eroded to their roots. The Grand Canyon is the largest vortex in America. We will drive the South rim of the Canyon stopping along the way for different views of the Canyon and the Colorado River which runs through the bottom. We also will visit the Tusayan Ruin and Museum which provides a glimpse of Anasazi Indian life at the Grand Canyon some 800 years ago. On through the Navajo Reservation and Painted Desert to Wupatki and Sunset Crater. WUPATKI and SUNSET CRATER - An ancient Anasazi ruin with an estimated 2,000 archaeological sites. One of the largest ceremonial centers in Arizona it was named Wupatki by the Hopi meaning “tall house”. The largest of the ruins was three stories high and had more than 100 rooms. Nearby is a ceremonial amphitheater, ceremonial ball court, and “blow hole” which delivers a blast of cool air even during the summer. The Indians come here when they want to hear the voice of Mother Earth for guidance. At this ancient ceremonial site we will honor those who came before us. Sunset Crater is 1,000 foot high cinder cone last erupted in the winter of 1064-1065 A.D. The crater dominates the surrounding fields of cinders, lava flows and spatter cones. The bright reddish hues of the decomposed, water stained sulfuric rock at the summit are in stark contrast with the black basalt of the adjacent rocks. Dark at the base, the volcano also has shades of red, orange and yellow leading to the summit and takes on a rosy tint during the hour before sunset appearing to be on fire. As we continue, we go through the Bonita Lava flow which creates many energy lines and physically looks other worldly. |
